Week 2 - The Learning Continues - October 26,2020
This week we continued our unit on Social, Emotional and Spiritual Learning (SESL) focussed on the middot (Jewish values) that guide and govern our behavior. We are working to teach our students skills they can use during this challenging time through a Jewish lens.
The Tamarim class watched a video of children acting out different scenarios of Jewish core values. During their discussion of the value of kavod (respect) one student said, he shows kavod by by agreeing to disagree when we have disagreements with others. Another student said, he shows kavod by including everyone even if others are different than he is.
The Anavim class did an improv game to act out different middot. When discussing the way they want to use those values one student said, "Something I want to get better at is being calm. I'm so angry all the time these days." That resonated with another student who said, "Me too!" "Covid makes me angry. I'm excited to learn more patience to help me with my anger."
It was wonderful to be together to explore these important Jewish values and apply them to our lives.
In Hebrew the most advanced Hebrew group has begun learning Torah trope, the chanting that they will apply to the Torah portion when they read it at their B Mitzvah. They began with the two most common tropes, mercha and tipcha.
