January 13th, Torah 101

Although we were sad to be back on our screens for our first session back at Seekers, seeing the unmasked smiles of our students was an unexpected perk! The new year has ushered in a new unit here at Seekers: Torah stories!

Arielle's Judaics class watched a video about creation and discussed some of the confusing aspects of the creation story. Isaac made an excellent point that although the source for light was not created until the fourth day, the light that was created on the first day was maybe more of a metaphorical light, one that gave the power to create.

Tali's class played a Kahoot about the basics of the Torah. One student said that the Torah is "a ridiculously big scroll!"

Grace's class started their exploration of the Torah by each sharing their favorite books and the lessons that they take from them. This got them ready to talk about Judaism's favorite book--the Torah!

Adira's class shared their own personal words of Torah with each other. Julianna shared a story about how she and her best friend met, and Leora shared a story about a time when someone made an assumption about her identity which made her feel misunderstood. The students reflected on stories that were foundational to their own identities.

And now for some...Hebrew Highlights!

  • Grace's class did a Hebrew scavenger hunt where they found items in their homes that began with the same sounds as their Favorite Hebrew Letters. Charlie scavenged a special hat for the letter hay (ה) and then showed the class some cool hat tricks!
  • Leilah's class also did a scavenger hunt but with the Hebrew words adom (red), kahol (blue), and yarok (green). Each student found a red object, a blue object, and a green object. The class then played a game with these objects by announcing the Hebrew color for the object they found.
  • Arielle's class practiced learning different parts of the body in Hebrew. Ariel drew a beautiful and detailed depiction of a human body and successfully labeled different parts in Hebrew.
It is clear that Seekers community remains invigorated even in the virtual world. That being said, we are thrilled that we will be welcoming you all back to the Romemu Center on January 24th.

L'hitraot!
