November 22nd, What is a Mitzvah?
As part of our unit on Jewish theology, our students have begun thinking about mitzvot or sacred acts. We learned about different things Jewish tradition requires of us.
Grace's class learned about mitzvot and explored the mitzvot that students were familiar with, such as lighting Shabbat candles, returning lost objects, and sharing with friends. They touched the mezuzah on the door and the tzit-tzit on the tallit, tied to symbolize the 613 mitzvot. The class then made cards to honor their parents, or signs to welcome their guests. Every student left seekers on Monday having done a mitzvah!
Adira's class discussed mitzvot, specifically the differences between mitzvot and middot. One student recognized that sometimes performing mitzvot can be difficult "Mitzvot sometimes make me feel pressured to be a perfect person." Another student explained one of the mitzvot they learned about as well: "It's important to honor your elders because they have more life experience than we do."
Arielle's class enjoyed an exciting classroom switch and was able to incorporate technology into their lessons. Anna shared several thoughtful about God and religious practice.
And now, for some Hebrew Highlights!
